Elizabeth K. “Libby” Humphries has served as the Fredericksburg Commonwealth’s Attorney since August 1, 2021, and as a prosecutor since 1999, first in Charlottesville (1999-2018) and then in Fredericksburg (2018 – present). She has successfully prosecuted violent crime jury trials throughout her career, including murder, malicious shootings, robbery, sexual assault, and armed burglary. Libby has long experience with leading and working on multi-disciplinary stakeholder teams and ensuring that prosecution outcomes are rooted in local values. She has lived in the City of Fredericksburg for over ten years (from 1995-1999 and since 2018).
As a line prosecutor, Libby worked on and supervised prosecutions on domestic violence, special victims, and juvenile justice. In Charlottesville, she represented the prosecutor office as a key member agency of a community workshop that established Foothills Child Advocacy Center in 2006, to enhance services and build strong prosecutions for child abuse victims. Before switching to prosecution, Libby began her public service legal career at the Fredericksburg Public Defender Office where she represented teenagers and children charged with crimes.
Libby has been licensed to practice law in Virginia since 1995. She received her law degree from the University of Virginia and her undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College.
Libby lives with her husband, Thad, in Fredericksburg’s Darbytown neighborhood.
